If you are looking to make a little extra money, you have a lot of options. You can pick up a second job, working nights and weekends. You can work hard at your current job in order to get a promotion, putting in extra hours and effort. You can try to invest your money and get lucky on a great stock selection, or you can go a different route.
You can start your own blog. Starting your own blog, I am convinced, is the perfect side business for anyone, with one exception. If you are looking to make money in a short period of time, it won’t work. For example, if you have a wedding to go to in a few months and you need a little extra cash, then it won’t work. You would be lying to yourself if you thought you could start a blog and make any significant money in 3 months.
But, if you are looking for the long-term supplemental income that a blog can provide, I think it’s the perfect idea.
Why Blogging is Better than Getting a Second Job
If you are looking to make a little extra money each month, you may be tempted to get a second job. Usually, this type of job will be low-paying. Whether it is working at Starbucks on the weekends, picking up a few late-night shifts as a janitor, or any other entry-level positions, it’s not going to pay well. Most people, when they are looking for a second job, obtain one that is out of their current career track. This essentially makes all of their expertise worthless and you have no choice but to accept the low income.
Blogging is a different story. It offers flexibility and the potential to earn a lot of money. Some of the popular bloggers make five figures each month. While this is rare, it does give you an idea of the potential of blogging. It can be your primary income if you devote enough time and energy into it (combined with a little luck). Yet, that’s not all that blogging has over a second job:
Flexibility
This cannot be emphasized enough. Imagine getting home from work, only to leave for your second shift. I’m tired enough working on 8 hour day. I can’t imagine another. Blogging offers flexibility that no traditional second job can match. This means that you can work in your free time. Whether it is early in the morning, at your lunch break, or even late at night when you are sitting on the couch watching TV. Blogging as a side business offers this flexibility. Heck, you can even be out of the country on vacation and still keep up with it all. It doesn’t require you to work late hours either. You are your own boss.
Potential Exponential Growth
Working a second job allows you to make only X amount per hour. Whatever the hourly rate is (unless you are in sales, paid on commission), it is fixed. There’s no hope to make a lot of money for your time. You may get incremental raises, but your primary purpose with working this job is just to make a little extra. You may not be concerned with how much you make per hour, but you should be. Working for a low hourly rate is equivalent to wasting your time. Blogging has potential for exponential income. A blog’s income is built upon hours of hard work. Slowly you can build up your traffic and get your blog noticed. While it may seem that progress is slow, I am convinced that blogs have the potential to take off at any point. With the right amount of traffic, your hourly rate can increase significantly. While it may start out at a couple dollars per hour (at best), you have the potential to earn $50-100 per hour (if not more).
While it may seem difficult to imagine making a lot of money with a blog (or multiple blogs), I want to tell you that it is possible. You can earn a lot of money on the side, while still having time to do what is important in your life.
